D701: British hotel architecture between the 1920s and the 1960s

3Ls Lunchtime Talks

This talk addresses the subject of Bruce Peter's recent book, 'The Modern Hotel in Britain', by examining the development of hotel and motel architecture between the mid-1920s and the 1960s. In that timespan, architectural modernism came to prominence and there were major modal shifts from rail and sea to road and air travel, requiring a great expansion in hotel provision. Tourism also grew into a major national industry. The lecture emphasises Glasgow and Scottish examples, as well as key buildings from all over the UK. Bruce Peter is Reader in Design History and Theory at Glasgow School of Art.
