E426: Using Technology in your Family History Research (online via Myplace)

Genealogy online anytime

10 credits (Genealogical Studies)

Explore the vast range of Scottish and worldwide online sources available to research your family history. You need to have a subscription to an online service and a discussion of which to choose is held at the start. Learn strategies to assist with online resources including going beyond the basics. Discover ongoing developments in genealogical technologies and a range of software. Written and recorded lectures and exercises are provided along with an interactive discussion forum.

Our long-standing, credit-bearing, online classes provide lessons using downloadable learning materials and are designed as an immersive learning experience where students can interact with each other on a daily basis if they choose. Classes are delivered through Myplace, the University's virtual learning environment. This is a user-friendly platform and all you need is a broadband internet connection. Besides allowing students to work in their own time there is regular written tutor interaction. The tutor may incorporate ‘live chats’ with your fellow students (which you can access via the Zoom link placed within the Myplace site, there is NO requirement for students to download the Zoom app for this purpose). You can also study for credit if you choose by completing set assessed elements. Once the Centre has confirmed the class will be going ahead, you will be sent an email which will include a weblink to CLL’s website providing all the relevant information for starting the class. IT Services will issue the Myplace username/password a few days prior to the class commencing in two separate emails.
