E401: Family History Research: an introduction (OS674) (online via Myplace)

Genealogy online anytime

10 credits (Genealogical Studies)

Discover sources useful for tracing the story of your own family, including indexes, original records and online sources. The focus is on Scottish and English records, but also these strategies can be used for other countries. Case studies show how various sources are used to build a meaningful genealogical record of your family. Written and recorded lectures and exercises are provided with an interactive discussion of research results and problems arising. The text for this class is: 'Discover your Scottish Ancestry: Internet and traditional resources', G Holton and J Winch, 2nd revised ed. (2009), Edinburgh University Press. Note that this class replaces the online, credit-bearing version of the ‘Family History Research: An Introduction’ class (OS626). Credit can be awarded for either class, but not both.

Our long-standing, credit-bearing, online classes provide lessons using downloadable learning materials and are designed as an immersive learning experience where students can interact with each other on a daily basis if they choose. Classes are delivered through Myplace, the University's virtual learning environment. This is a user-friendly platform and all you need is a broadband internet connection. Besides allowing students to work in their own time there is regular written tutor interaction. The tutor may incorporate ‘live chats’ with your fellow students (which you can access via the Zoom link placed within the Myplace site, there is NO requirement for students to download the Zoom app for this purpose). You can also study for credit if you choose by completing set assessed elements.

Once the Centre has confirmed the class will be going ahead, you will be sent an email which will include a weblink to CLL’s website providing all the relevant information for starting the class. IT Services will issue the Myplace username/password a few days prior to the class commencing in two separate emails.

Please note the Myplace site will open on the start date of the class, and is then accessible for the full duration of the class (there are no scheduled weekly sessions). You will be notified via Myplace of dates of any live chat opportunities.
