Learn about Hispanic culture through literature. In these monthly sessions, study six novels by outstanding Latin American and Spanish contemporary authors. Examine different genres and gain understanding of turbulent histories and complex societies by reading captivating books from the Spanish-speaking world. Brief introductory talks by the tutor to contextualise novels, followed by small and large group discussions. Open to everyone who enjoys exploring different worlds. The novels to be discussed are ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ by Laura Esquivel (Mexico)(22 October), ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ by Manuel Puig (Argentina)(19 November), ‘Carpenter’s Pencil’ by Manuel Rivas (Galicia, Spain)(17 December), ‘The Feast of the Goat’ by Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru)(21 January), ‘Zorro’ by Isabel Allende (Chile)(18 February) and ‘A Heart so White’ by Javier Marías (Spain)(18 March). All books are available in translation. Although this class is taught in English, the books can be read in either English or Spanish. Each book (acquired independently) needs to be read in advance of the online session.
