Explore some of Latin America's most recognisable icons through the media of film. Learn about the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Argentina's revolutionary Che Guevara and Cuban novelist Reinaldo Arenas. Learn about these icons' lives and their historical importance through watching extracts and learning about history and different cultures. Illustrated lectures and discussion. Students to watch the three films to be discussed, prior to each class: Frida (2002), Director Julie Taymor, The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), Director Walter Salles, Before Night Falls (2000), Director Julian Schnabel.
Class time will be dedicated entirely to contextualisation of the films (introductory lecture) and discussion.
