S730: The Borgias: Life and Death in Renaissance Italy (online via Zoom)

History

Their name has become a byword for the intrigue, corruption and violence of renaissance Italy but how true is this image of the Borgias and their age? Using contemporary accounts and art, rather than the myths of TV dramas and enemy propaganda, gain a clearer understanding of the real nature of the Borgias. Discover the genuine culture, politics and warfare of Italy in the 1490s and early 1500s. Revealed are Pope Alexander VI, Cesare and Lucretia, Pope Julius II, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and, of course, Macchiavelli. Decide whether they deserve their decadent reputations. Illustrated lectures and appropriate class handouts.
