10 credits (Genealogical Studies)
Learn about the scientific basis of autosomal testing and the skills needed to interpret DNA test results for genealogy. Autosomal tests are the most popular type of DNA test (taken by men and women), and can be linked to online family trees. Through a theoretical and methodological framework this class will help you interpret and understand the relevance of your results and matching to others. Scenarios are identified where autosomal or further testing might be applied and you will also learn how to use third party utilities such as Gedmatch. Suitable for those who have already taken an autosomal DNA test. The key textbooks for this class are: Holton, Graham S. (ed.) (2019) Tracing your ancestors using DNA: a guide for family historians. Barnsley: Pen & Sword plus Bettinger, Blaine T. (2019) The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy. 2nd Edition. Cincinnati, Ohio: Family Tree Books.
Our long-standing, credit-bearing, online classes provide lessons using downloadable learning materials and are designed as an immersive learning experience where students can interact with each other on a daily basis if they choose. Classes are delivered through Myplace, the University's virtual learning environment. This is a user-friendly platform and all you need is a broadband internet connection. Besides allowing students to work in their own time there is regular written tutor interaction and also some 'live chats' with your tutor and fellow students (which you can access via the Zoom link placed within the Myplace site, there is NO requirement for students to download the Zoom app for this purpose). You can also study for credit if you choose by completing set assessed elements.
Once the Centre has confirmed the class will be going ahead, you will be sent an email which will include a weblink to CLL’s website providing all the relevant information for starting the class. IT Services will issue the Myplace username/password a few days prior to the class commencing in two separate emails.
Please note the Myplace site will open on the start date of the class, and is then accessible for the full duration of the class (there are no scheduled weekly sessions). You will be notified via Myplace of dates of any live chat opportunities.
