S727: Johannes Vermeer: Mystery and Stillness

Art Appreciation

Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) produced some of the most revered works of art in the world. His paintings of interior scenes in Delft stand out for their luminosity and serenity. Little is known about the man himself but learn about his use of light and perspective, his reflections on religion and art, and the illusions of reality he created in this one day seminar. After a short lecture to provide historical context, discuss ten of his masterpieces such as 'Girl With a Pearl Earring', 'The Milkmaid' and 'The Art of Painting'. No previous knowledge is required, just an interest in finding out more about one of Europe's most distinguished painters and talking about art in a relaxed atmosphere.
