Music & Singing
Inheriting the glorious operatic tradition which, from Verdi and Rossini, stretches back to Pergolesi and Monteverdi, Giacomo Puccini is often regarded as one of the most prominent, prolific and iconic representatives of the Verismo opera style. Since the advent of modern mass-media, breathtaking arias such as Nessun dorma (Turandot) and Un bel dì vedremo (Madama Butterfly) have permanently entered the Western cultural tradition, regularly featuring in tv adverts and radio promotions. Join us on a close study of three of Puccini's most remarkable operas: Tosca (1900); Madama Butterfly (1904) and Turandot (1924). Interactive lectures followed by seminar discussion. Knowledge of Music and/or of Italian language is not required. The class is suitable for all levels.
Please note there is no class meeting on Monday 6 May as this is a Public Holiday and the University is closed.
