This class considers Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s career as both a civil rights and human rights leader. We assess his efforts to end racial segregation and to secure the vote for African Americans. We also learn about a neglected aspect of his life: Dr King’s commitment to ending poverty and related inequalities for all racial groups in America. Through discussion, we situate his legacy and teachings to current and recent events including Black Lives Matter and the murder of George Floyd. The class discussions are supported with primary source documents and video clips.
