Explore two distinct contemporary styles of portraiture in this engaging and intensive 3-day class. Day 1 focuses on the bold, emotive brushwork of Chantal Joffe, teaching you to capture character through rapid mark-making and expressive form. Day 2 and 3 shift toward the meticulous, observational realism of Ishbel Myerscough, focusing on precise measurement and the subtle layering of skin tones. By contrasting these methods, you will learn to balance technical accuracy with personal artistic flair. The tutor will provide photographic references, but you are also encouraged to bring your own photographs to work from. Through demonstrations and sustained practice, you will develop the confidence to navigate between fluid expression and refined realism. Some drawing experience is useful.

This class will be held over three consecutive days, 10.00-16.00 (with an hour for lunch). Select high-resolution photos with strong, directional lighting and natural expressions, ideally printed at A4 size to ensure both fine details and bold structures are easy to capture. Students are responsible for purchasing their own materials.
