From both historical and legal perspectives, this class will examine the Nuremberg Laws (1935), which legalised the persecution of Jewish people and other targeted groups, and consider the role of legal frameworks in enabling discrimination and violence. The class will also explore the economic confiscation of property, examining the challenges of recovering stolen assets and ongoing debates about restitution, justice, and compensation. Finally, we will study the Nuremberg Trials (1946), including their origins as an International Military Tribunal, the charges, including crimes against humanity and the verdicts. This class will promote an understanding of how law and society have been affected by these events. Lecture style with question and answer time.
