All around us in the city are examples of 'public art' – sculptures, murals, and installations of all kinds sited outside or indoors in publicly accessible locations. Some serve a very practical purpose; some are commemorative; some foster social dialogue or protest; some reflect collective memory or local culture; some are serious, others simply quirky; but all seek in some way to enhance the environment and embody an artistic or craft aesthetic. This class will explore 20 examples, teasing out some of the background stories.
