By the 1920s and 1930s a new style was in vogue, Art Deco (after the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industries Modernes in Paris). It was characterised by stylized geometric forms which suggested up-to-date glamour, style and luxury. Art Deco styles influenced all art forms, from architecture to industrial design, fabric design to transportation, jewellery to advertising posters. This class will consider the emergence of Art Deco and will focus on a number of buildings in Glasgow, examining their changing roles in the city.
