In the post-war period, during the 1950s – 1970s, a new architectural style came to the fore, particularly in public housing and institutional construction. Prioritising function and affordability over decoration, there was an emphasis on materials, textures and construction, often resulting in raw, monolithic, expressive forms. It proved to be a highly controversial style and many buildings have been demolished in recent decades. It remains a divisive issue among architects, planners and the public. This class will explore the emergence of brutalism and will consider a selection of buildings in Glasgow. We will also ask the question: how should we value the city's brutalist legacy?
