S758: Sensing the Sacred: The Cult of Relics in Christianity

History

Come to a history class exploring the cult of religious relics. The veneration of Christian relics, martyrs and saints has been central to the Catholic faith since at least the 4th century AD. This practice has also been one of conflict and struggle for earthly power with believers and doubters in conflict. What are the origins of the cult of relics in the Late Antique world and how did it spread? Finally, examine the evidence of the most controversial relic - The Turin Shroud and whether it matters. This class is presentation-based.
