E412: Genetic Genealogy: An Introduction (online via Myplace)

Online Genealogy

10 credits (Genealogical Studies)

This class provides basic knowledge of the scientific and technological aspects of genetic genealogy and teaches the skills needed to interpret results from paternal, maternal and autosomal DNA test results. Approximately half the time focuses on Y-DNA testing, including using STRs and SNPs. Through online lectures, exercises and interactive forums, you will develop an understanding of DNA test results and what further tests and/or genealogical research might prove worthwhile. Suitable for those who have already taken a DNA test. For those interested in taking a Y-DNA test before joining, the only provider of these which offer a results-matching database is Family Tree DNA. The key textbooks for this class are: Holton, Graham S (ed.) (2019) Tracing your ancestors using DNA: a guide for family historians. Barnsley: Pen & Sword plus Bettinger, Blaine T. (2019) The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy. 2nd Edition. Cincinnati, Ohio: Family Tree Books.
