D233: The Corruption of Angels: Medieval Heresy 1000 - 1500

Ancient & Medieval History

Why were there so many Christian heresies in Medieval Europe? Why did the Catholic Church view them as a threat? Using documentary and artistic evidence discover the fascinating world of medieval heresy, alternative roads to salvation, piety and power, sanctity and atrocity. In uncovering the reality of medieval heresies find answers for some fundamental questions:  Who were the heretics and what did they believe? How did the Church combat heresy and why did it resort to violence and coercion?  Was the ‘Inquisition’ as oppressive and brutal as popular legend has us believe? Are there any lessons to be learned from this ‘War on Heresy’ for our own 21st century ‘War on Terror’? Learn through  illustrated lectures with dedicated handouts where appropriate.
