D321: Early Christianity: From Jesus to Constantine

Modern History

The creation of the Christian Church is a most important story in the development of world history, but also  most enigmatic and little understood. Learn how Jesus came to be viewed as a mysterious, other-worldly figure at the heart of a major new religion. As his teachings spread across the eastern Mediterranean, through the teachings of Paul, John and their successors, it was transformed in the space of three centuries into a centralised, state-backed creed, worlds away from its humble origins. Examine how a man came to be hailed as the Son consubstantial with God, and of how a revolutionary, anti-conformist Jewish sub-sect became the official state religion of the Roman Empire. Lecture-based with source materials including film, photographs, and contemporary documents.

Please note: this class will start on Friday 26 April and not Friday 19 April as advertised in our Printed Brochure.
