D132: An Introduction to Latin

Classical Languages

In this class complete beginners will be welcome, as well as those who have some previous, perhaps partially forgotten, knowledge of Latin and wish to reacquaint themselves with it in an unstressed, exam-free setting. The nature of the language will be explained, and gradual acquisition of grammar and vocabulary will lead to the ability to translate simple texts. At the same time, Roman cultural background will be discussed, and the two thousand year history of the language and its relevance to the present day will be considered. The required textbook is: 'Wheelock's Latin' (7th edition) Collins (ISBN 978-0-06-199722-8).
