Ancient and Medieval History
Modern Europe’s roots lie in the Christianisation of the Roman world. But following the conversion of Constantine the Great, Christianity itself was also dramatically transformed. Bishops became a new elite and living as a monk replaced martyrdom, with both becoming venerated as saints after death. Change also brought conflict as ‘Christianities’ became ‘Christianity’ under the emperors’ patronage, and Christians competed with Pagans and Jews for power and privilege. Through surviving written and archaeological sources, explore the political, social and cultural background of Roman Christianity as it emerged from being a minority cult to becoming the sole official religion of the Roman Empire- the ‘Empire of Christ’. Learn through illustrated lectures, film clips and online resources.
These classes are aimed at those aged 50 and over.
