Modern History

The impact of Napoleon and France in shaping modern Europe in the wake of the French Revolution was profound. He dominated his age as his armies dominated the continent, leaving no European country untouched or unchanged. Examine Napoleon's rise to power; his attempt to reshape Europe through a combination of conquest and reform; the devastating consequences for France of his fall from power; the failure of the restored Bourbon and Orleanist monarchical regimes; ending with an analysis of the revolution of 1848, the creation of the Second Republic and the birth of modern France. Learn through lectures, class discussion and other primary sources.
