D280: The Pre-1914 Scottish Novel (online via Zoom)

Literature

Interested in Scottish literature and history? Explore five novels written in the 18th, 19th and early-20th centuries. Question the nature of the evolving historical novel. Consider the times in which these novels are set and the times in which they were written. Debate their contemporary relevance and their place in the Scottish literary tradition.

The books discussed are Henry MacKenzie’s ‘The Man of Feeling’, John Galt’s ‘Annals of the Parish’, Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Weir of Hermiston’, Gavin Greig’s ‘Logie O’ Buchan’, J MacDougall Hay’s ‘Gillespie’. All that is required is a commitment to reading the books in advance of the class meetings.
