History, Ancient and Medieval History
This class will introduce you to the fascinating and bloody realities of the Albigensian Crusades in southern France 800 years ago. Drawing on a rich variety of contemporary documents and accounts, including those of the inquisition, we will challenge modern myths and misrepresentations of these crusades and the Cathars. We will consider some key questions: Who were the Cathars and what did they believe? Why did the Church view them as such a threat? Was the 'inquisition' as oppressive and brutal as popular legend would have us believe? Are there any lessons to be learned from this 'War against Heresy' for our own 21st century 'War against Terror'? Learn through illustrated lectures and online resources.
These classes are aimed at those aged 50 and over.
