D316: Rome's Gallic Wars: The Struggle for Iron Age Europe 58-50 BC

Ancient and Medieval History

Julius Caesar's wars to conquer Gaul are some of the most dramatic episodes in ancient European history. At the head of increasingly battle-hardened legions, he fought his way across much of modern France, Belgium, crossed the Rhine into Germany and the Channel into Britain. Through illustrated lectures, drawings, and discusion we will follow the events of those wars. From the migration of the Helvetii from Switzerland, through the bloody campaigns against the Belgae, Germans and Britons, to the last stand of the Gallic peoples at Alesia. Drawing on Caesar's 'notes' (de bello Gallico) and new archaeological evidence discover the realities of these wars, and meet Caesar's opponents: Ariovistus, Cassievellaunus and the heroic Vercingetorix. Roman historians say much about Caesar's ambitions, but little about the consequences of the wars on the societies of Iron Age Europe, the cost in lives and wealth, so we will attempt to recover and retell their stories too.
