D230: Pax Romana - Rome and the Northern Barbarian World 100 BC-300AD

Ancient & Medieval History

At its height, the Roman Empire was the most powerful in the ancient world, with frontiers stretching from Scotland to the Nubian desert  But what of the indigenous peoples along and beyond those frontiers, dismissed as ‘barbarians’ by the Romans who conquered and fought them?  Drawing on a rich range of sources (written, archaeological and artistic) learn how Romans and ‘Barbarians’ interacted with each other.  From Britain and Gaul and along the Rhine and Danubian frontiers, we consider whether relations were always hostile or whether accommodation and assimilation was the norm of daily life.  The tutor poses key questions about the nature of Rome’s influence in the ‘Barbarian’ world, and the impact on Rome itself. Learn through illustrated lectures with dedicated handouts where appropriate.
