D053: Beginners Guide to Indirect and Direct Painting

**NEW for Academic Year 2024-2025**, Drawing & Painting

This introductory class for people interested in traditional drawing and painting techniques with an experimental twist. Learn about “indirect painting”, building up layers with the image revealed towards the end of the process. Later, work with a limited palette using a “direct painting” technique, defining the image in a single layer. The key materials used are Shellac Varnish, Ink and Oil Paint. Lessons will often start with a short tutor demonstration. Work from a selection of source images provided or you can bring your own. The aim is to create two paintings simultaneously, moving between them, allowing for drying time and for each process to unfold. Practical class with hands-on exercises. Basic drawing and painting skills is a prerequisite.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own materials.
