D215: Music and the Movies

Film Appreciation

This class traces the history of music in the cinema, from the earliest days of the nickelodeon piano to the multi-channel blockbuster soundtracks of today. Landmark films and key composers will be identified and illustrated, and the recent emergence of film scores as concert pieces will be considered. Feel free to suggest your own favourite pieces of film music, though this is not compulsory! Although mention will be made of some examples, the main focus of the class is not musical films but music in films. Lecture style with audio/video examples, time for discussion.
