D067: From Edison to Spotify: a short history of recorded sound

**NEW for Academic Year 2024-2025**, Music & Singing

It's less than 150 years since Thomas Alva Edison made the first sound record on a piece of tinfoil, Edison would barely recognise today's options for listening to recorded music, whether in physical format or digital. This class takes a fairly light-hearted look at the development of audio recordings since that first experiment in 1877 – vinyl, tape and digital options will be considered with illustrations where possible.
