Law, **NEW for Academic Year 2024-2025**
Have you ever wanted to know more about aspects of law when inspired by discussions in the media on television, radio or otherwise? In this interactive class, learn and discuss topics with a focus mostly on Scots law but not exclusively. Consider the contrast involving historical perspectives such as the eradication of the rule of law in Nazi Germany, the role of the Nuremberg trials and a glimpse at EU law. This weekly class will focus on topics such as criminal law, looking at contemporary issues such as juryless trials and the not proven verdict, evidential matters including corroboration, delict and the law of damage and public law. Examine the roles of the Scottish justice institutions such as the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, Scottish Prison Service and Scottish Legal Aid Board, and Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service. It will consider the role of law making in light of current policies such as assisted dying. It will also cover cases of historical interest to Scotland including a snail and ginger beer bottle, a folly and some infamous murder cases. It assumes no legal knowledge, just an eagerness to learn about the background to the development and operation of law and its importance to Scottish society.
Please note there is no class meeting on Wednesday 12 March.
These classes are aimed at those aged 50 and over.
