D703: The Neuroscience Underpinning Mindfulness

Health and Wellbeing

Mindfulness meditation has long been shown to improve cognition, as well as mental and physical wellbeing. More recently, functional brain scans have uncovered the brain structures and networks responsible for these positive effects. Using a combination of practice-based learning, didactic teaching and group discussion, this program will explore mindfulness practice and the neuroscience that underpins it. This experiential class will give students step-by-step mindfulness instruction and recorded guided meditations will support individuals in bringing mindfulness to their everyday lives. Seminar style with experiential learning, didactic teaching and group discussion.

Although Mindfulness has been shown to be beneficial for mental health problems in the right circumstance, please note that this class is educational and not a group therapy. If you are currently receiving treatment from a mental health professional, we advise that you inform them of your taking part in this group. Also, if you have recently, or are currently going through a traumatic life event e.g. death of a close family member, you may wish to reflect whether this is the right time for you to take part in this program.
