Modern History, History: Out and About
Uncover the hidden history of one of Glasgow’s most fascinating buildings in this special session at The Ramshorn—Strathclyde’s striking A-listed Gothic Revival landmark in the Merchant City. Built in the 1820s, the former Ramshorn Kirk was once the place of worship for the city’s wealthiest residents, many of whom are commemorated in its stained-glass windows and surrounding street names. This session also explores the building’s ties to John Anderson, the university’s visionary founder, whose grave lies nearby. On a guided tour led by those who work there, you’ll gain rare access to parts of the building normally closed to the public. Hear the complex stories of some of those buried in the graveyard— including figures with connections to both the transatlantic slave trade and the abolitionist movement—and discover how their legacies shaped Glasgow and the wider world.
These classes are aimed at those aged 50 and over.
