E407: Inferno: Novel Writing (OS675) (online via Myplace)

Creative Writing online anytime (Blaze)

10 credits (Applied Writing)

'Inferno' is for anyone who wants to start work on writing a novel or who already has one in progress, or for students who have completed the courses from 'Kindling' to 'Ablaze' and wish to take their writing to the next stage. The class is also suitable for anyone writing an autobiography or other types of long-form writing. During the class you will be asked to submit a short outline of your project and three pieces of writing between 1500 and 3000 words, all part of the large piece you're working on. You will be put into groups of 3 to 5 and will read and give feedback on your group's writing in online open forums. The tutor will also deliver written feedback on all submitted pieces and there will be ongoing informal discussions on issues of craft, creativity and editing linked to the class' generous provision of creative writing resources. This class is delivered through Myplace, the University's virtual learning environment, allowing you to work in your own time. Note that this class is the online, credit-bearing version of the 'Introduction To Novel Writing' class (OS167/OS283). Credit can be awarded for either class, but not both.

The Blaze online creative writing courses are designed to follow a learning progression route from beginner to advanced level, although students are welcome to sign up for whatever course they wish, at any level they feel appropriate to their skills. The learning pathway is as follows:

1. Kindling (beginner level)
2. Feeding the Flame (intermediate level)
3. Ablaze: Feeding the Flame 2 (intermediate/advanced level)

4. Inferno (for long-form and novel writing - beginner to advanced) Our long-standing, credit-bearing, online classes provide lessons using downloadable learning materials and are designed as an immersive learning experience where students can interact with each other on a daily basis if they choose. Classes are delivered through Myplace, the University's virtual learning environment. This is a user-friendly platform and all you need is a broadband internet connection. Besides allowing students to work in their own time there is regular written tutor feedback and also two 'live chats' with your tutor and fellow students (which you can access via the Zoom link placed within the Myplace site, there is no requirement for students to download the Zoom app for this purpose). You can also study for credit if you choose by completing set assessed elements.

Once the Centre has confirmed the class will be going ahead, you will be sent an email which will include a weblink to CLL’s website providing all the relevant information for starting the class. IT Services will issue the Myplace username/password a few days prior to the class commencing in two separate emails.

Please note the Myplace site will open on the start date of the class, and is then accessible for the full duration of the class (there are no scheduled weekly sessions). You will be notified via Myplace of dates of any live chat opportunities.
