The Open Campus (undergraduate study for all)

We are delighted to offer this opportunity again this year to join undergraduate students in their first-year lectures and get a real flavour of what studying is like as an undergraduate student. The classes have been adapted for Open Campus students so there are no exams or assessments, providing intellectually stimulating opportunities to undertake non-accredited learning in collaboration with the Department of Social Work and Social Policy. This module will complement the module completed in the first semester - 'Social Policy and Society in Contemporary Scotland'. It will examine how social problems are identified and constructed and consider the different viewpoints from which they are defined and experienced. It will also consider the ways in which social conditions or patterns of behaviour with negative consequences for individuals become viewed as social problems. This module builds on the foundations introduced in the first Semester and considers the range of issues associated with the identification, definition and interpretation of 'social problems'. It will focus on four broad themes: social security; crime; migration and sexuality. This Semester 2 undergraduate Social Policy module is now available to Centre for Lifelong Learning students, with the assessable elements removed so there are no exams or assignments. No prior knowledge of social policy is required.

A full induction session will be held on Monday 12 January at 11.00am in room GH752, level 7, Graham Hills Building, 40 George Street, after which all students will have access to class materials and will attend class on-campus each week. A full timetable will be provided at the induction session. There are 15 classes in total. Classes are held on Mondays and some Wednesdays at 11 - 12pm.
