M113: Introduction to Counselling Theory

This 5-week experiential course is for those who would like to know more about counselling theory and what being a counsellor entails. Each week will introduce you to key theoretical concepts from the Psychodynamic, Person-Centred and Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic disciplines. Participants will also be encouraged to increase their self-awareness through applying the theories to their own circumstances, with a view to further understanding themselves. This course comprises of 5 sessions delivered once a week for 3 hours. Learning will take place in a large group setting, with some small group, pair and individual work. No formal assessment will take place, however participants will be asked to complete a multiple-choice questionnaire during the conclusion and review, to test learning (and how well the facilitator has delivered the information!). The aims of the 5-week course are as follows:

-To raise participants awareness of the history of counselling and key terms in the counselling arena.

-To increase participants self- awareness regarding how different therapeutic theories can be applied to their own experience.

-To raise participants awareness of the settings and applications of different therapeutic modalities.

-To raise participants awareness of different routes into further training.

-To raise participants awareness of the role of self- awareness and ethics in allowing a counsellor to practice.

This microcredential will be delivered online via Zoom.
