M115: Assessment and Formulation

Children and Young People's Centre for Justice

This instance of learning was developed in collaboration with the Risk Management Authority (RMA ) and CYCJ to provide an introduction to Formulation in risk Practice when applied in the context of managing risk of harm for young people in conflict with the law. Understanding the 'why' behind behaviours for children and young people who find themselves in conflict with the law is central to effective risk practice and management. Key features of this learning instance are defining formulation as well as the key benefits of its use, recognising good vs poor formulation, using a case study to illustrate how formulation can inform our risk management plans and understanding the benefits of collaborative formulation.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Explain formulation - what it is, what it is used for and the benefits of using formulation
  • Examine models of formulation and differentiate between different models of formulation
  • Identify a good example of formulation by applying a formulation checklist
  • Critique strengths and weaknesses of formulation
  • Produce an action plan from an example formulation to inform intervention planning
  • Increase confidence in ability to use formulation.

This fully online course can be undertaken at the flexible pace of the learner when suitable, taking approximately 4 hours.

This e-learning is suitable for those who respond to the needs of children currently in, or on the cusp of being involved in conflict with the law.
