D712: East Meets West Art Class!

Other Creative Arts

This class is inspired by the tutor's recent experiences in China and her cultural heritage. All themes and ideas are based on her research and her ongoing interest in East meets West. In this practical art class, students will be examining Van Gogh's almond blossom painting and comparing it with Chinese blossom ink painting. You will study both painting styles, producing some ink paintings and an oil painting of Van Gogh's picture. Following this, we will look at paintings by Whistler (glazing figures with long robes), Pan Yuliang (Chinese figure paintings inspired by Matisse) and Matthew Wong (expressive, colourful oils with elements of East and West). Tutor will provide art demonstrations and short seminars to support the themes. By the end of the week, you will develop art appreciation skills and understand these artists' cultural influences and painting styles. No need to purchase art materials as students will have the use of the Centre's materials. All levels of abilities are welcome.

Please note this class is held over 4 consecutive days, Tuesday 13 August, Wednesday 14 August, Thursday 15 August and Friday 16 August, 10.30-15.30 with an hour break for lunch. The fee includes the cost of materials.
